Project One -
Grand Sumo, Osaka

The 2025 Grand Sumo Tournament in Osaka was a powerful blend of tradition, athleticism, and raw emotion, held at the iconic Edion Arena. As one of Japan’s six major tournaments, it offered more than just competition—it revealed the deep cultural rituals of sumo, from ceremonial salt tosses to silent moments of focus before each match. This year’s standout was Ōnosato, who claimed the Emperor’s Cup after a dramatic playoff win, marking a major milestone in his career. Through a documentary lens, I captured the candid, in-between moments: quiet rituals, intensity behind the scenes, and the emotional highs and lows of this storied sport. This small collection of photos reflect sumo not just as a competition, but as a living tradition filled with human stories.
